Kochkunstmuseum
In Frankfurt, Kochkunstmuseum grew from a project devoted to cooking, culinary traditions, and their preservation. Matthaeus Carl Banzer founded the museum in the city’s Windmühlstraße. Its foundation stone arrived in 1908, and Vietze & Helfrich designed the building with a grand exhibition hall.
The International Association of Chefs began in Frankfurt in 1896 and organised its first International Culinary Art Exhibition in 1900. A teaching kitchen and lecture hall later supported demonstrations, instruction, and culinary innovation. International exhibitions brought chefs and culinary enthusiasts together around what was then the world’s largest cookbook collection.
The museum closed in 1937, sending its collection to the Sommerhoffpark manor house before wartime bombing destroyed much of it. Afterward, the building became the Hotel der Kochkunst and gained heritage protection in 1984, while the Deutsches Museum für Kochkunst und Tafelkultur opened in 2015.
