Castle Chapel of St Nicholas and the Blessed Virgin Mary

Burgkapelle St. Nikolaus und Hl. Jungfrau Maria stands on the eastern side of castle ruins, where a rectangular nave meets an eastern choir. Beside the choir, a tall annex completes the surviving plan. Local sandstone forms the walls, and some blocks still show marks from lifting and setting them.

Construction began in 1438, after the earlier chapel became the village parish church. The castle community therefore needed separate worship space, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and the Virgin Mary. In the choir, surviving rib beginnings mark a lost Gothic net vault. Shield-shaped fittings and a shaped chancel arch preserve details of the former interior. Outside, stepped buttresses frame pointed windows, while the eastern window retains original fish-bladder tracery.

The nave rests above the barrel vault of the former southern gate passage. This position joins prayer space to an earlier defensive route within the fortress. Two projecting bands divide the annex, whose ground floor held two cross-vaults. A possible crypt beneath the chancel may have held burials for the castle lords. Movement in softer layers beneath the sandstone tilted the choir walls, and conservation after 2000 stabilised them.
