Adolf Blankenhorn
This statue commemorates Adolf Blankenhorn, a pioneer of viticulture and oenology from Müllheim. The figure connects local wine culture with the scientific study of grapes, soils and production.
Born in 1843, Blankenhorn studied natural sciences in Karlsruhe and Heidelberg, where chemistry shaped his work. He returned to his family vineyard at Blankenhornsberg in the Kaiserstuhl. In 1868, he founded Germany’s first oenological institute at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. His research addressed phylloxera, a pest that devastated European vineyards, by cultivating resistant American grape varieties. He also helped standardise grape varieties and their names, reducing confusion among winegrowers.
