Maria im Stein
Maria im Stein is a pilgrimage chapel in Überlingen, set among the steep slopes of the Aachtobel valley. The open structure stands beside paths through a landscape shaped by the Salemer Aach.
According to legend, knight Albero von Bodman founded a church here after returning from a crusade and captivity. Pilgrims later sought help from the image known as the Comforter of the Afflicted. The tradition grew especially strongly during the Baroque period, when visitors came hoping for healing and left votive tablets behind. The chapel visible today dates from 1948 and continues this centuries-old place of pilgrimage.
The valley took shape during the last ice age, when the river cut into soft molasse rock. Hiking routes lead past the chapel towards the ruins of Hohenbodman and through the Aachtobel. Inside, the votive tablets preserve the quiet evidence of prayers, gratitude and personal stories.
