Sylter Inselbahn
Sylter Inselbahn traces a narrow-gauge railway across Sylt, linking the ferry port at Munkmarsch with Westerland and villages across the island. You can picture three routes: the Ostbahn ran east, the Nordbahn served Wenningstedt and Kampen, and the Südbahn reached Rantum and Hörnum.
The railway operated from 1888 to 1970, carrying passengers and goods before modern roads reshaped island travel. During the Second World War, additional tracks extended towards military installations, while the Südbahn remained Hörnum’s only connection until roads arrived in the 1930s. The Hindenburgdamm later connected Sylt to the mainland by rail, and rising car use helped bring the island railway to an end.
Today, former railway routes serve as cycling and walking paths, with surviving traces recalling the trains once known as “Rasende Emma.”
