Hauptkirche St. Trinitatis
Hauptkirche St. Trinitatis stands in Altona, Hamburg, as a Baroque church designed by Holstein builder Cay Dose. Its portals carry the monograms of Danish kings Christian V and Christian VI. The building began in 1742, when Altona belonged to the Danish state and ranked among its largest cities.
The Protestant interior originally gathered galleries and boxes around a congregation facing a large pulpit and Baroque altar. Two barrel vaults crossed above the centre, while a Dutch-style copper tower helmet rose over the church. Wartime bombing destroyed the interior and collapsed the tower, leaving the outer walls and tower stump. Reconstruction from 1954 to 1969 restored the exterior but gave the interior a modern arrangement.
The central altar now faces the congregation, with the medieval Smiling Christ of Altona nearby. A 1972 organ by Detlef Kleuker and bells cast in 1966 complete this meeting of historic fabric and postwar design.
