St. Michael
St. Michael stands in Passau on the northern bank of the Inn, shortly before it meets the Danube. The Jesuits built this church between 1665 and 1678 after the city fire destroyed their earlier church. Pietro Francesco Carlone designed the building beside the Leopoldinum, a former Jesuit college that now serves educational institutions.
Its Italian-influenced exterior remains deliberately restrained, while the white interior opens beneath a barrel vault with pilasters and stucco. Giovanni Battista Carlone and his workshop created much of the ornament, including the large angel figures by Diego Francesco Carlone. Black-and-gold side altars from 1678 accompany a 1714 painting of the fallen angel above the high altar.
A chapel dedicated to Francis Xavier brings early Rococo detail to the southern wall. The adjoining buildings later housed a seminary, school and academy, while the former college library became the State Library of Passau. Its collection includes about 360,000 books, 320 manuscripts and the Vornbach Bible from 1421.
