Nderi i Qytetit
Nderi i Qytetit is a monument near Hotel Çajupi in Gjirokastra, Albania, dedicated to three citizens honoured by the municipality. Eqrem Çabej, Ismail Kadare and Musine Kokalari connect this setting with the city’s intellectual, literary and political history.
Eqrem Çabej shaped Albanian linguistics through research into the language’s origins and development. Ismail Kadare brought Gjirokastra’s atmosphere and history into internationally recognised novels and literary works. Musine Kokalari combined writing with political activism as a co-founder of Albania’s Social Democratic Party in 1943. Her opposition to the communist regime led to thirty-seven years of imprisonment and internment, and she became Gjirokastra’s first woman to receive the honour. Together, these three lives link knowledge, literature and social change to one place near the city centre.
