Neue Mühle
Neue Mühle stands at Schlösserbrücke in Erfurt, beside a tributary of the small Gera. This technical museum preserves a grain mill powered by an undershot Zuppinger water wheel.
The mill reaches back to the thirteenth century and carried names including Hirschmühle and Martinsmühle. After a fire, reconstruction gave it the name Neue Mühle, while later modernisation added a gas motor and a three-phase motor in 1919. The water wheel arrived in 1895, and Heinrich Gruhn, the last miller, helped preserve the machinery’s original function. Reopened as a museum in 1992, the building joined the Erfurt City Museum and has generated hydroelectric power since 1996.
Across its floors, a belt bucket elevator reveals how material moved through the mill. Grinding gear, historical roller mills, plan sifters and a mill brake elevator show each stage of the milling process.
