Das dritte Land
Das dritte Land is an artist garden installation by Korean artists Han Seok Hyun and Kim Seung Hwoe on Erfurt’s Petersberg. Basalt-shaped mountains and rising water vapour shape the view.
Originally created at Berlin’s Kulturforum, the installation now brings its Korean landscape to Erfurt. Thirty-five wild plant species come from North and South Korea. The garden draws on the Baekdudaegan mountain range, which crosses Korea and represents connection across a divided peninsula. Joseon-period landscape paintings inspire its changing perspectives.
Water vapour, plants and dark mountain forms turn the setting into a place for cultural and political exchange. Nature frames questions about borders and unity. The planted space also invites reflection and community engagement around historical divisions.
