Zum Csikós

Zum Csikós was a Hungarian tavern on Andreasstraße in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt, set within a baroque building ensemble. The historic Creudersche Apotheke occupied this site first.

Otto and Trude Schuster established the restaurant in postwar Düsseldorf, bringing Hungarian food and Bohemian beer to the old town. Its fiery goulash soup became a local talking point.

The tavern became a meeting place for artists, architects, and theatre figures, who received half-price meals there. Jazz musicians also performed in the tavern’s rooms.

Günter Grass played the washboard, worked as a bouncer, and gathered material for The Tin Drum there. Horst Geldmacher also appeared as a jazz performer.

A painting commissioned by Schuster portrayed the tavern’s regulars, including Schuster, Ewald Mataré, and Otto Coester. The tavern’s story brings together Hungarian cooking, Bohemian beer, jazz, painting, and Düsseldorf’s literary life.

Zum Csikós also belonged to Düsseldorf’s historic baroque building ensemble. The former restaurant remains part of the city’s cultural history.
