Jesus fällt zum dritten Mal unter dem Kreuze stands in Würzburg as the ninth station of the traditional Christian Stations of the Cross. The scene shows Jesus collapsing beneath the cross for the third time on his way to crucifixion. Fourteen stations trace his final journey, from condemnation through crucifixion to burial. In the Würzburg region, the tradition appears in different materials and artistic forms. Gaukönigshofen has fourteen gilded oval wooden reliefs, created by Heinz Schiestl in 1919. Their design recalls the apostle medallions made by the Bossi brothers. At Bieberehren, figurative reliefs in Burgpreppach stone lead up 270 steps to the Kreuzkapelle. Those stations, made by Jakob Stößel between 1859 and 1860, carry crosses above their neo-Gothic forms. This ninth scene remains a focused image of physical burden, human weakness and perseverance.
