Ilse Zeilberger
At Sterngasse in Würzburg, Ilse Zeilberger brings a Jewish family’s history into the city’s streets. She was born on 29 August 1927 to Justin and Lilly Zeilberger. Her father worked as a master tailor and took part in the German Democratic Party. The family’s roots reached Ermshausen and Sulzdorf in Bavaria.
The household included Ilse’s brother Fred, born on 16 December 1929, who later survived the Holocaust and emigrated to the United States. Ilse became a victim of the Holocaust, while the family’s wider history records persecution, deportation, emigration and remembrance. Photographs, certificates, family trees and accounts of Würzburg’s Jewish communities preserve details of their lives across generations. Stolpersteine and other memorials keep the fate of Holocaust victims present in the places where families once lived.
