Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar

Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar stands on Serra de São Nicolau in Vila Nova de Gaia, above the Douro River. This sixteenth-century monastery belongs to the Order of Saint Augustine. Its church and cloister share a rare circular plan beneath a hemispheric dome with a narrow continuous balcony.

King João III ordered monks from São Salvador de Grijó to move here, and construction lasted seventy-two years. Financial difficulties and political instability delayed the work while Portugal stood under Spanish rule. The church contains gilded carved altars, Solomonic columns, and eighteenth-century polychrome figures of Eulalia, Apollonia, and Augustine. In 1832, the Siege of Porto turned the monastery into an improvised fortress after Wellington’s troops occupied it in 1809.

The building later served as barracks for the Serra do Pilar Artillery Regiment and houses the Património a Norte exhibition space. From the hill, you can see bridges over the Douro and historic Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Its circular silhouette joins stonework, gold leaf, and military history within the UNESCO World Heritage area.
