Forte Fenilone

Forte Fenilone stands southwest of Verona, about 400 metres north of Santa Lucia, between two railway lines. This former Austrian fortification formed part of the first entrenched field, a defensive ring protecting the city’s approaches.

Built from 1848 to 1856, the complex followed a semi-octagonal, asymmetrical plan with a circular central keep, artillery positions, a dry moat, and three caponiers. Seventeen guns covered the countryside towards San Massimo and Santa Lucia, while the road from Mantua also lay within reach. A well supplied the inner courtyard, and two underground passages connected it with the patrol route and caponiers. Forte San Massimo and Forte Santa Lucia extended this network around Verona, then part of the Quadrilatero with Peschiera del Garda, Mantua, and Legnago.

After 1861, the second entrenched field reduced its military importance, although the fort continued guarding against infantry infiltration. Most masonry disappeared during the first half of the twentieth century, leaving traces of the earthworks enclosed within a railway branch.
