The Chiesa di San Lazzaro dei Mendicanti stands in Venice as an architectural landmark shaped by healthcare, charity, music, and art. Its history includes a hospital for lepers and a later shelter for beggars. The church formed part of the Ospedale di San Lazaro e dei Mendicanti, later becoming the civic hospital chapel. Vincenzo Scamozzi designed the church and its hospital cloister. Its nave has no side aisles, while choir galleries and a canal-facing facade define the building’s structure. A sundial marks the south side of the bell tower.

Inside, works by Veronese, Tintoretto, and Guercino share space with monuments linked to Venetian families and leaders. Guercino’s Saint Helena with the Cross is unique in Venice. The church also preserves a metal grille associated with orphaned girls trained in singing and instrumental music. Antonio Vivaldi’s father taught violin at the church’s music school. Simon Mayr composed several oratorios for this Venetian church, extending its connection with musical education and performance. The church is wheelchair accessible within the hospital complex.
