Knisja tal-Madonna tal-Pilar

Knisja tal-Madonna tal-Pilar stands in Malta beside the Auberge d’Aragon, pressed against a narrow street. Its Baroque façade rises in two tiers beneath a large triangular pediment. That close setting brings the architecture within arm’s reach, while the modest exterior conceals a richly decorated interior.

In 1670, it began as a private place of worship for the Knights of Aragon. The 1793 earthquake heavily damaged the building, especially its dome. Romano Carapecchia then rebuilt the space with a square nave and lofty painted dome. Gilded floral carvings, marble balustrades, and side altars fill the interior with Baroque detail. Saint John the Baptist and Saint James stand beside the altar, while paintings show the Madonna appearing to Saint James. Works by Maltese artists extend this devotional story across the walls. Around seventy angel figures gather above the gold, creating the clearest image of this compact Maltese interior.
