CAB-gebouw
CAB-gebouw stands in Utrecht’s Cartesiusdriehoek, a former railway worksite surrounded by tracks and industrial buildings. Built in 1949, the large structure began as the Dutch Railways’ central bus repair workshop. Sybold van Ravesteyn designed its sober post-war architecture for constant movement, maintenance, and heavy vehicles.
The building survived after the surrounding site lost its original railway function and became a municipal monument in 2013. Its distinctive facade and roof structure preserve van Ravesteyn’s architectural signature. Restoration plans reopen sealed windows and doors, bringing more light into the former workshop and reconnecting it with the neighbourhood.
New internal streets will lead through the structure as the Blue District grows around it. Two timber residential towers will rise through the roof, while creative workspaces, apartments, leisure areas, and public meeting places fill the historic shell. A music hub, brewery, and CABlab will add new activity, with greenery linking the interior to the central park.
