Fort Safranberg (Werk XL)
Fort Safranberg (Werk XL) stands in Ulm, Germany, as part of the nineteenth-century Bundesfestung Ulm. Built between 1855 and 1858, it guarded the eastern mountain front against troops approaching from Safranberg and Elchingen. Its central reduit, dry moat, and three-sided rampart create a compact defensive layout.
Earth traverses were added in 1880, while engineers lowered the main gate five years later. The fort measures 150 by 100 metres, making it the smallest fort within the Ulm fortress complex. After military use, the site stored explosives and fireworks before undergoing restoration.
Damage from a Second World War bomb was repaired in 2011, and the collapsed gorge-side reduit was restored. Much of the interior now stands empty, with a privately maintained garden occupying the courtyard.
