Alter Botanischer Garten

Alter Botanischer Garten spreads beneath mature trees in Germany, with quiet lawns, rare species, and shade across a university park. The canopy includes beech, ginkgo, and other trees from regions far beyond this one. Students, families, and children share its benches, paths, and tree-shaped playground.

Between 1805 and 1809, the university created the grounds as a botanical garden with greenhouses and an arboretum. Mature ginkgo trees still recall the garden’s botanical research. A Palm House of iron and glass stood here until demolition in 1970, despite public protests. Its surviving traces connect the leafy park with a vanished centre of scientific work.

Earlier layers include student sports, tournaments, a riding school, and a theatre. A marble Hölderlin monument and a Carl Correns memorial mark the eastern section. The sandstone Serpent Throne stands beside a playground whose wooden towers imitate trees. Children climb through the wooden structure while students and families rest beneath the established canopy.
