Garten der Schönen Melodie

Garten der Schönen Melodie is a Chinese garden in Stuttgart, standing at the corner of Birkenwaldstraße and Panoramastraße. High, curved roof edges mark its southern Chinese architecture, while the Pavilion of the Four Directions occupies the centre. From the garden, you can see Stuttgart’s city basin and the surrounding hills.

Chinese craftsmen helped relocate the garden from Rosensteinpark after its construction for an international garden exhibition. Rock formations represent mountains, ponds suggest seas, and plants echo natural vegetation within this miniature world. A surrounding wall separates the garden’s imagined world from the city beyond. At the entrance, a pebble-paved yin and yang symbol presents contrasts such as hard and soft, life and death.

Architecture, painting, poetry and calligraphy come together throughout the garden. A waterfall cascades over rock formations, giving physical form to the idea that water and mountains create melodies.
