Baumaņa skvērs
Baumaņa skvērs is a green public square in central Riga, where Brīvības Boulevard meets Tērbatas Street. Across the road, Riga Regional Court adds a formal urban backdrop to the park.
The square honours Latvian architect Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis and occupies the former Ravelīna Square. In 1874, Riga’s first circus opened here inside a wooden building that stood for about five years. In 1902, Riga City Council considered creating a permanent square at this corner, previously leased to a mineral-water kiosk owner. War and political change later brought several monuments, including a wooden German soldier known as “Wooden Fritz” and a Karl Marx bust installed in 1919.
Today, Gunārs Astra’s monument stands among the square’s greenery, unveiled on 20 January 2022. Sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs created the memorial for the Latvian dissident and freedom fighter. Brīvības Boulevard and Tērbatas Street keep the space connected to central Riga’s movement. Under the trees, the city’s past appears through a circus site, vanished monuments, and a modern memorial.
