Neue Synagoge
Neue Synagoge occupies a historic site in Germany, where Jewish worship, destruction, remembrance and renewal meet in one architectural setting. The present building opened in 2019.
The building combines a quiet courtyard, a golden inscription band and an east-facing prayer room. Rose Ausländer’s verses appear above the entrance.
Inside, the central bimah anchors the room, while a women’s gallery rises above the congregation. The building recalls an earlier synagogue with an oval plan, a steel-reinforced dome and twin towers.
That structure burned in 1938. Only the adjoining community house survived, with a basement that still contains a ritual bath.
Today, Neue Synagoge connects Jewish memory with a functioning place of worship and community. Architecture carries that story.
Dark historical loss and present renewal meet through the building’s materials, orientation and visible Jewish symbols. Each feature gives the site a clear architectural language.
The new structure stands on ground marked by upheaval, while its open interior reflects continuity and return. Its forms bring older Jewish traditions into a contemporary setting.
