Schaiblingsturm
Schaiblingsturm stands on the banks of the Inn in Passau, projecting from the medieval city wall beside the Innkai promenade. Its white, round masonry rises above a natural stone base. Built around 1250, the defensive tower watched river traffic and protected the city from attacks.
A small masonry bridge provides the only entrance, while arrow slits and narrow rectangular windows keep the interior dim. Salt storage, gunpowder, boat moorings and a cable ferry later connected it with Passau’s river trade. Watchmen, journalists and theatre actors also lived here before Leopoldinum began using the tower for workshops, reading evenings and occasional lessons.
Fragments of a 1481 fresco remain on the river side, including Saint Nicholas with three golden balls. The painting once showed Saint Christopher, Saint Nicholas and Passau’s wolf beneath the city arms. Across the Inn, Mariahilf Monastery and its baroque pilgrimage church complete the view.
