Can Montenegro

Can Montenegro is a historic noble house on Palma’s winding Carrer Montenegro in Mallorca, Spain. A medieval street layout surrounds nineteenth-century buildings and preserves Gothic details, including the square window at number one.

The fifteenth-century building follows Mallorca’s traditional three-level arrangement, with two rounded stone doorways on the ground floor. A Despuig family coat of arms and a plaque marking Ramon Despuig’s appointment as Grand Master in 1737 stand between them. Five stone balconies with iron railings define the main floor, while octagonal pillars and pointed arches shape the porch windows. The entrance hall opens onto a courtyard with two arches resting on Doric columns, and a staircase leads to a gallery above. Cardinal Antoni Despuig Dameto supported the arts, and the residence once held major works by Murillo, Juncosa, Femenia, and Van Dyck, plus Gabriel Vallseca’s maritime map. Its library also ranked among Palma’s notable collections.

An eighteenth-century renovation gave the facade, courtyard, and main floor their Baroque character, while nineteenth-century military use caused damage. Nearby Can Cabrer preserves small double-arched windows, linking this corner with Palma’s wider group of noble houses.
