Aereo Lockheed F104-S (Starfighter)
Aereo Lockheed F104-S (Starfighter) stands on the University of Palermo campus, within the Museo Storico dei Motori e dei Meccanismi. Its long fuselage, extremely short wings, metal structure, and T-tail create the unmistakable profile of a supersonic interceptor.
The F104-S ASA-M represents the final Italian version, produced in the late 1970s and modernised from 1997. Aeritalia built more than 200 examples under licence, while the Italian Air Force operated this aircraft until 2004. Its General Electric J79-GE-19 turbojet produces 79.6 kilonewtons with afterburner and pushes the aircraft to Mach 2.2. The machine served with the 9th Wing at Grazzanise near Caserta before entering the museum collection in 2010.
Its dimensions make the design easy to read at a glance: 16.7 metres long, 7.6 metres wide, and 4.1 metres high. In February 2023, specialists restored the original grey livery during Italian Air Force centenary activities. The surrounding museum collection extends across aircraft, stationary engines, marine machinery, hydraulic machines, educational mechanisms, and technical instruments.
