Musée Marc Chagall

Musée Marc Chagall stands in Nice as a French national museum devoted to Marc Chagall’s paintings and religious imagery. André Hermant shaped the building around the artworks, creating calm spaces beside a Mediterranean garden.

Chagall helped plan the museum before it opened in 1973, choosing how his works would appear together. Its central collection contains seventeen paintings inspired by Genesis, Exodus, and the Song of Songs. Twelve paintings occupy the main hall, whose three rhombus-shaped sections give each work its own wall. Preparatory sketches, stained glass, sculptures, drawings, and gouaches extend the collection beyond the Biblical Message series. A library of more than six thousand books supports research into Chagall, art history, and religious studies.

Olive trees, cypresses, pines, holm oaks, and lavender surround the garden. A mosaic designed by Chagall overlooks the pond, while blue stained-glass windows brighten the concert hall. Wheelchair access makes the museum easier to explore, and the setting brings paintings, architecture, water, and planting into one experience.
