Bastion 5
Bastion 5 stands in Neu-Ulm as part of the Bundesfestung Ulm, a nineteenth-century fortress complex. Built for defence against troops approaching from the south, it combines a wall, escarpment, glacis, and mortar battery.
Hauptmann Schäfer and Oberleutnant Oppermann designed the structure between 1844 and 1850. Brick forms its main material, while limestone appears in decorative elements typical of the Bavarian side. A shield wall protected the mortar battery and strengthened this position. Behind the wall, a war hospital built between 1850 and 1854 later became barracks. Fire destroyed its additional floors in 1945, leaving the building close to its original form. The right side survived bomb damage from the Second World War, and the site has stood under monument protection since 1973.
