Frauenkirche
Frauenkirche rises in the heart of Munich as a late Gothic cathedral built from red brick. Its construction began in 1468 under architect Jörg von Halsbach and reached completion after twenty years.
Two towers climb just over 98 metres, each crowned by a dome added in the sixteenth century. Inside, double rows of pillars divide the vast hall into three sections, while stained-glass windows cast light across artworks from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries. Many members of the Wittelsbach dynasty rest here.
At the entrance, a dark mark known as the Devil’s Footstep anchors Munich’s best-known church legend. The footprint supposedly records where the devil stood after discovering that the columns concealed the cathedral’s windows.
