Palazzo Melzi d'Eril
Palazzo Melzi d'Eril stands in Milan as an elegant example of eighteenth-century neoclassical architecture. Its facade gained a new design in 1830, when architect Giacomo Moraglia gave the palace a restrained, dignified appearance. Smooth rustication covers the ground floor, while an arched entrance leads towards the main balcony above. Bas-reliefs and Hercules on the keystone add sculptural detail to the entrance.
Inside, a porticoed courtyard opens onto a loggia with architraved architecture, where beams rest directly on columns. The palace’s gardens disappeared during urban development in the 1930s, while the restored interiors preserve neoclassical character and artworks by Giambattista Tiepolo and Luca Carlevarijs. The Cariplo Foundation restored the building and made its rooms accessible to the public.
Look closely at the entrance: Hercules stands above the arch, set into the central stone that holds the composition together.
