Elisabeth - Elisabetta
Elisabeth - Elisabetta stands in Meran’s green summer promenade beside the river, among trees, benches, and walking paths. The monument honours Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi. Hermann Klotz created the sculpture in 1903 from white Lasa marble. Sissi sits in a wicker chair, wearing a simple dress and a relaxed expression.
Her visits to Meran from around 1870 helped strengthen the town’s reputation as a spa destination for health and relaxation. The surrounding promenade connects with the winter promenade and Wandelhalle. During Italy’s fascist period, officials moved the sculpture into a less visible corner of the spa park. Restoration returned it to the summer promenade in 1977.
The area is sometimes called Sissi Park because of the monument. Walking routes nearby lead through the promenades towards views of Meran and the surrounding mountains. The Sissi Weg links Trauttmansdorff Castle with the town centre, passing gardens and villas associated with the Empress.
