Minnenas hav, hav av minnen

Minnenas hav, hav av minnen is a graphic concrete relief along the east park walkway in Sweden. A long, low wave crosses the path beside the concert and congress complex. Up close, its surface reveals letters, loops and signatures pressed into the grey material. Sunlight follows the grooves as footsteps and wheels pass over them.

Karolina Erlingsson proposed the relief in an open competition for the surrounding outdoor space. Local residents supplied short texts in their own languages, and the artist transferred their handwriting into concrete. These personal phrases lie together like sediment on a seabed, turning private memories into a shared public surface. People meet, pause and cross the park while other people’s words remain beneath their paths.

The incomplete sentences make reading sideways part of the experience. Some languages remain unfamiliar, yet every handwritten line preserves a human gesture. Concrete protects the words from wind and rain, holding many lives in a surface that resembles a petrified shoreline. The most memorable detail is the contrast between moving feet and writing fixed permanently under them.
