10 Downing Street
10 Downing Street stands in London as the official residence and office of the British Prime Minister. Its famous black door fronts a building larger than its exterior suggests. Behind it, a chequered hall opens into rooms and staircases, creating a much larger interior than the façade suggests. The address combines home, workplace, and reception venue.
From these rooms, governments directed both World Wars and shaped decisions about empire, nuclear weapons, economic crises, and welfare. Political figures including Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher worked here. Receptions have welcomed British royalty, United States presidents, other national leaders, and charitable organisations. A corridor reaches Number Twelve through Number Eleven, the Chancellor’s official residence.
Its story reaches back through a medieval brewery linked to Abingdon Abbey and later terraces designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The surrounding Westminster area already served as a government centre before these buildings took shape. The chequered floor provides the clearest detail inside the famous doorway.
