Stadtbad
Stadtbad rises in Leipzig as a three-winged Art Nouveau complex, set behind the street beneath a tower. Its triangular gable carries Leipzig’s coat of arms, held between two stone lions. Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg designed the building, whose construction began in 1912 and opened in July 1916. Two separate swimming halls served men and women, while the larger men’s hall measured 32 by 12 metres.
A wave machine produced waves up to one metre high, an early feature in European indoor swimming. Baths, saunas and orthopaedic exercises extended the facility beyond swimming, including a richly decorated Moorish women’s sauna. Columns, arches, gold details, colourful mosaics and an ornamental fountain shaped that interior. Swimming ended in 2004 because of structural problems, while restoration work has secured the roof and vaulted ceilings and parts now host events.
