Helmstätter Herrenhaus

Helmstätter Herrenhaus stands in Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim beside the Tiefburg, presenting a historic manor house within an old castle setting. Its protected façade preserves the character of a residence built around 1700 by Georg Adam von Helmstatt.

Seventeenth-century wars damaged the earlier estate, so the Helmstatt family replaced it with this house on the former grounds. For centuries, walls connected the manor and Tiefburg, while gardens, stables, livestock buildings and a large barn shaped the surrounding estate. The family lived here until the early twentieth century, and Walter Niebel later converted the property into a restaurant serving European, Mediterranean and Italian food.

The large entrance gate, dating from around 1600, probably once welcomed visitors to the entire walled complex. Today, the building remains wheelchair accessible, while the former gardens and farm buildings have largely given way to the nearby Protestant church, parsonage and street.
