Die Hirschgasse Heidelberg
Die Hirschgasse Heidelberg stands beside the Neckar in Heidelberg, with views towards the river and nearby castle. The protected historic building houses a hotel and the Le Gourmet restaurant. Wooden beams, exposed stone walls, and antique and modern furniture shape the interior. Meals are served in the former fencing hall.
The site began as a Lobenfeld Monastery manor farm within the medieval village of Dagersbach. Wine and beer were served in a garden here by 1472. Around 1580, a summer house and fish ponds formed the Hirschgarten, which later divided into two properties. The Ditteney family expanded the inn with a hall in 1790.
From the early nineteenth century, student fraternities used the large hall for Mensuren, their fencing duels. Mark Twain described such a day after visiting in 1878. A fire reshaped the interior in 1954, and the last duel took place in 1979. Beer mugs and students’ swords preserve that connection.
