Stadtbibliothek Hannover
Stadtbibliothek Hannover is a public library on Hildesheimer Straße in Hanover, with branches across the city. A book bus extends its reach beyond the central building, while wheelchair access welcomes visitors with different mobility needs.
Books, newspapers, magazines, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and music streaming form a collection of about 965,000 media items. The institution grew from the fifteenth-century Ratsbibliothek and other historical collections through donations and acquisitions. Karl Elkart designed the present building between 1929 and 1931, using vertical construction to overcome limited space. Its expressionist brick architecture includes a five-storey magazine tower, recognised as Europe’s first library high-rise.
The building later served as Gestapo headquarters during the Second World War, adding a difficult layer to its history. Today, education, culture and accessible media meet inside a landmark built from brick and shaped by memory.
