Katholisches Trauerzentrum und Kolumbarium Sankt Thomas Morus

Katholisches Trauerzentrum und Kolumbarium Sankt Thomas Morus stands in Hamburg as a church, memorial site, and community centre. Jörn Rau designed the building, constructed between 1979 and 1981 from red brick and dark slate. Its uneven gable roof creates a tent-like silhouette, evoking the Exodus, while parish rooms, a rectory, and a caretaker’s apartment complete the complex.

The former community rooms became a Trauerzentrum in 2016, adding a columbarium for up to 1,000 urns. Warm-toned concrete urn blocks with bronze lettering continue from the church into a garden with deciduous trees and seating. This arrangement keeps the burial spaces connected to the church while preserving its large interior.

Inside, a cross made from a million-year-old oak trunk from Russia stands beside a baptismal font set among prehistoric and semi-precious stones. A bronze Stations of the Cross completes the devotional furnishings. At the centre of the 520-square-metre garden, a communal grave shares space with a birdbath, giving the memorial landscape a small, tangible focus.
