Georgskirchturm
Georgskirchturm rises in central Erfurt as the surviving bell tower of St George’s Church, a medieval church complex. You see a historic church tower whose surrounding city setting connects it with Erfurt’s architectural heritage.
The community first appears in documents from 1066, while Widelo funded the church’s construction in 1132. Builders erected the tower between 1380 and 1426, then repaired it in 1620 and 1987. During the Reformation in 1525, the church became Protestant and served only funeral services. Secularisation turned it into a school in 1619, before workers dismantled the church by 1632 and reused its bricks for Petersberg Citadel. Only the bell tower remained.
