Augustijnenkerk
The Augustijnenkerk stands in Eindhoven beside the Mariënhage monastery, a neo-Gothic church built for Augustinian fathers. Its reddish-brown brickwork carries yellow-stone bands, pointed arches, and tall windows. A six-sided tower rises 66 metres above Eindhoven.
P. J. Bekkers designed the church with J. P. I. Hegener, and builders completed it in 1898. The three-aisled plan forms a cross, while chapels, confessionals, side altars, and a carved pulpit fill the interior. Daan Wildschut and Charles Eyck created stained-glass windows for the transept walls, while Jan Custers made some furnishings. Michaël Maarschalkerweerd built the main organ in 1906, combining German design with French influences.
Jean Geelen’s four-metre Sacred Heart statue crowns the spire with open arms. Wood and copper make the figure, which weighs about 800 kilograms. The church served as a public monastery church before its last Eucharist in 2016. Since then, the decommissioned building has no regular worship, while plans consider new uses for the church and monastery. Eindhoven residents sometimes call the statue Jezus Waaghals because it balances so prominently above the city.
