St. Maria Königin
St. Maria Königin is a Roman Catholic church in Düsseldorf’s Lichtenbroich district, built between 1956 and 1958 for a growing residential area. Gottfried Böhm shaped its central square around a cubic structure, while a tall, pointed octagonal tower rises above it.
Eight angled concrete pillars support the tower from inside, placing the altar directly beneath its peak. The congregation gathers in a semicircle, and influences from Mies van der Rohe and Martin Gropius appear in the building’s clear geometric design. In 1958, the church became an independent parish before joining Heilige Familie parish in 2011.
A Kriess organ from Molsheim adds eighteen registers across two manuals and pedals, with mechanical action and electric stop action. Copper cladding covers the tower after its 1976 renovation, while later work altered the altar area and upgraded the windows for noise protection.
