Wörnitztor
Wörnitztor stands in Dinkelsbühl, Germany, as one of four historic city gates within the medieval town. Its gabled roof rises above the gate tower, giving the structure a distinctive silhouette. The surrounding fortifications belong to a system of eighteen gates and towers, each with its own design.
Built during the Staufer period, the gate formed part of the inner city wall protecting the smaller thirteenth-century town. Construction finished around 1235, during the thirteenth century. By the end of the fourteenth century, builders had heightened the tower and changed its proportions. A Renaissance gable with a bell tower was added during the sixteenth century.
On the outer side, the imperial city's coat of arms connects the gate with Dinkelsbühl's former status. Three golden ears of wheat stand on three hills beside the imperial eagle. That emblem remains the clearest detail to look for beneath the historic gable.
