Monastère de Lérins

Monastère de Lérins rises as a fortified monastery on Saint-Honorat, an island just off the coast of Cannes. Its stone walls combine a defensive tower, residential rooms, chapels, and cloisters shaped by centuries of monastic life. Honorat and Caprais settled here around 400 to 410, establishing a community that later faced repeated raids.

Construction of the main tower began between the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, after attacks had exposed the island’s vulnerability. A thirteenth-century eastern extension added large windows, a hall, and the Sainte-Croix chapel, while fires later carried signals across the water to the mainland. The monks lived inside the fortified building until the late eighteenth century, despite attacks by Genoese corsairs and Spanish forces.

Inside, a stone staircase reaches an entrance about four metres above ground level. Pointed arches frame the first-floor cloister, where one column reuses a Roman milestone, while white marble columns line the prayer cloister above. The upper cloister contains marble brought from Genoa, and roughly ninety rooms once accommodated fifteen to thirty monks.
