Palau Moja

Palau Moja is an eighteenth-century neoclassical palace on Carrer Portaferrissa, near La Rambla in Barcelona. Its sober façades combine geometric volumes with a portal carrying baroque details. Josep Mas i Dordal designed the residence for Maria Lluïsa de Cartellà and Josep de Copons i Oms. Construction began in the 1770s and ended in 1789, after part of the city wall and Porta Ferrissa disappeared.

Inside, an irregular plan gathers rooms around a square, double-height grand salon. Francesc Pla, known as el Vigatà, covered its walls with historical and legendary scenes in 1791. A small chapel stands beside the salon, while six other rooms retain lower wall paintings by Pere Pau Muntanya. The central courtyard functions as a light well rather than an open-air garden.

Antonio López y López later added balconies and changed the second floor, while a testament protected the building’s character. Jacint Verdaguer lived here for about fifteen years, and Alfonso XII stayed in the Blue Salon in 1875. After a major fire in 1971, the Generalitat de Catalunya restored the abandoned palace during the early 1980s. The grand salon and painted rooms preserve a vivid trace of Barcelona’s aristocratic interiors.
