Ponte di Rialto
De Ponte di Rialto overspant in Venetië het Canal Grande, de belangrijkste waterweg van de stad. De stenen boog verbindt de wijken San Marco en San Polo. Overdekte hellingen leiden naar een centrale portiek, met winkels aan beide kanten.
Rond 1173 dreef hier een pontonbrug, die Ponte della Moneta werd genoemd. In 1255 maakte een houten brug die eerste oversteek duurzamer. Die brug kreeg twee hellingen en een middendeel dat voor hoge schepen kon worden opgetild. Na branden en instortingen koos Venetië voor steen, naar een ontwerp van Antonio da Ponte. De huidige brug werd tussen 1588 en 1591 gebouwd op duizenden houten palen in zachte grond.
Haar boog overspant 28 meter en laat boten onder een hoogte van 7,5 meter door. De voegen staan loodrecht op de druk van de boog en helpen het gewicht verdelen. Eeuwenlang was deze oversteek de enige vaste voetverbinding over het Canal Grande. Winkels langs de hellingen zetten een gebruik voort dat al in de vijftiende eeuw begon. De Rialto verschijnt bovendien in Shakespeares De koopman van Venetië, waar Shylock over deze plek spreekt.
