St. Laurentius
St. Laurentius is a Roman Catholic parish church in Zell am Main, protected as a historical monument in Bavaria. The building belongs to the Diocese of Würzburg. Its three-aisled basilica presents a central nave, two side aisles, and a northern chancel with three sides. An eastern tower rises beside the chancel beneath a flat pyramid-shaped roof and open roof turret. A statue of Saint Lawrence stands outside on the southern wall.
Julius Echter commissioned the first parish church here in 1623, during the Catholic Reform. That earlier building burned down in 1906. Würzburg architect Hofmann designed its larger successor, completed on the same site in 1929. Inside, wooden cross beams support the nave ceiling above a Pietà by Tilman Riemenschneider. Norbert Krieger built the organ in 1967. It stands above the entrance on the gallery, with twenty-six stops, two manuals, and a pedalboard, connecting the architecture with Zell am Main’s continuing parish music.
