St. Johannes Baptist
St. Johannes Baptist is a compact village church in Germany, where a low nave meets a taller, older choir. The intimate interior rises from a burial ground beneath the choir, built in 1255.
Late medieval frescoes show Christ on the cross and a Pietà, while the Pietà still reveals its age after restoration in 1995 for severe woodworm damage. The tower, added in 1755, reshaped the exterior, and the 1901 organ received a thorough overhaul in 1994. Inside, reconstructed side altars and a high altar follow surviving altar panels, completing work carried out in 1984 under Karl Hirner.
Look from the choir frescoes down to the restored Pietà: painted walls and aged wood hold the clearest contrast.
