Secession
Secession is an exhibition hall in Vienna, completed in 1898 by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich. Its Art Nouveau façade carries a lattice dome of golden leaves. Above the entrance, the motto “To every age its art, to every art its freedom” stands above three gorgons representing painting, sculpture, and architecture.
The building emerged as an architectural manifesto for artists who founded the Vienna Secession in 1897. Karl Wittgenstein provided the financing for the Vienna project. Its flexible plan combines a central rectangular hall with side aisles and movable partitions for changing exhibitions. That arrangement accommodates painting, sculpture, decorative art, and graphic work.
Inside, Gustav Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze from 1902 anchors the building’s connection with modern art. Artists run the exhibition space for contemporary art. The golden-leaf dome earned the local nickname “golden cabbage” for its unmistakable silhouette.
