Piazza Erminio Ferretto

Piazza Erminio Ferretto forms the principal square of Mestre, the mainland part of Venice, in Italy. Its layout reaches back to the medieval village and marketplace. Porticoes line the square, while the Duomo di San Lorenzo and Palazzo Da Re face the piazza. The Duomo combines a neoclassical facade with a Romanesque bell tower. Near the church, the Scuola dei Battuti stands beside a small garden, fountain, and iron flower kiosk. A flagpole marks the centre of the piazza. Palazzo Da Re presents an arched portico called the Pavion and a terrace above. The former Cinema Excelsior adds stonework and wrought iron. At the northeastern end, the Torre dell’Orologio preserves the last remnant of Mestre’s old castle. The Ponte delle Erbe links the square with the site of the old castle. Modern paving, marble cubes, ramps, metal railings, street lamps, and a fountain with bronze sculpture mark its later renovation. Archaeological work uncovered a communal burial site near the Duomo.
