Giardini Reali di Venezia
The Giardini Reali di Venezia occupy the space between Piazza San Marco and the San Marco basin in Venice. Canals surround the grounds on every side. A drawbridge links them with Piazza San Marco and the Procuratie Nuove across the Rio della Zecca. The layout combines formal geometry, water, neoclassical buildings, and a cast-iron pergola.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Napoleon’s redesign of the Marciana area included plans for a royal garden beside the palace. Granai di Terra Nova previously occupied the site. Later, a greenhouse, neoclassical Coffee House, and drawbridge connected the water’s edge with the palace complex. The iron pergola still defines its central axis. Early additions introduced two groves in the English garden style alongside the original Italian arrangement. The gardens subsequently fell into disuse and lost their original geometry. The Italian state and Venice then entrusted restoration and conservation to the Venice Gardens Foundation. Architect Paolo Pejrone led the restoration project. Its work restored the pergola and greenhouse while recovering botanical variety, formal structure, and harmony with surrounding buildings. Agapanthus creates a major display in summer.
